Il rilievo dell’Alhambra nel Setecento/ Survey of the Alhambra in the eighteenth century”

Abstract

One of the most important endeavours undertaken in Spain in the eighteenth century, the Age of Enlightenment, was the study and enhancement performed by the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts on what was considered its most important Islamic monument and the country’ historical and artistic heritage. Together with other studies performed by the Academy of History during numerous contemporary scientific projects, including documentation of Hi‐ spanic‐Muslim art and numismatic and epigraphic studies, this study is the forefather of studies on Spanish Arabism and one of the most important initiatives of all Oriental studies in eighteenth‐century Europe. The documents which were produced, especially the plan of the Alhambra, is still an excellent document, an outstanding work that in many ways is still useful even today
