In order to obtain an overview of the secondary metabolite content of a plant species such as Lotus japonicus, a profiling technique coupling sequential extraction with different chromatographic methods (GC-MS, HPLA-DAD/MS) was established. This method allows the qualitative analysis of ionic (charged) compounds such as alkaloids and non-ionic (neutral) compounds such as terpenoids and phenolic compounds.
