Mortality in the first years of life in Madrid (1916-1926): Inequalities across the urban environment

Abstract

We analyzed the risk of infant and child mortality between 1916 and 1926, looking at the big city of Madrid, with a focus on the differences between the ten districts that constitute its municipality. The next section presents the data and methods. Thereafter, we measure an important intra-urban variability in the levels of mortality, identifying four areas with different children’s survival chances. We tested several risk factors to determine their different impacts (if any) on infant and child mortality in each of those four areas. Finally, we end with a concluding discussion.
