Luis M. Carrascal is a Research Professor at the Department of Biogeography & Global Change of the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (Spain). He is also a member of the Integrative Ecological Biogeography research group. His current research interests are focused on macroecology (mainly related to biogeographical patterns of the avifauna of the South-Western Palearctic), and on the analysis of the interaction between abundance-distribution patterns of birds and some autoecological traits such as body condition, foraging ecology and responses to predation risk. His research program includes two specific scientific goals. The first is to explore the determinants of the geographical range and population density of terrestrial animal species at different spatial scales, accounting for ecological components while controlling for phylogenetic effects, and considering the relationships among the interspecific variation in population trends, distribution patterns, habitat preferences, niche breadth and morphology. The second goal is to study the interaction between environmental food availability and the thermal state of the environment (also considering the climate variation in the recent years) as determinants of the body condition, foraging ecology, distribution, abundance of vertebrates and beetles inhabiting the Iberian peninsula.
