Abstract: | We report on the existence of a coherence resonance effect as a function of the system size. We consider globally coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo systems under the effect of white noise and study the synchronization of the response as well as the regularity, as measured both by the jitter and the time correlation, is optimal for an intermediate value of the number of coupled elements. A simple theory, based on the Gaussian approximation, is able to explain qualitatively the observed phenomenon. | Description: | 10 pages.-- Published in: The Physics of Complex Systems, Vol. 155 International School of Physics Enrico Fermi, edited by F.
