The existence of coal basins in the Philippines was known since 1827, although their research was not conducted in an organized way until a few years later, when numerous discoveries of coal mines took place mainly in the islands of Luzon and Cebu. A Mining Bureau was settled in 1837, dependent on the governor of the islands and served by mining engineers sent from peninsular Spain and appointed by the Ministry of Public Works. The greatest efforts in relation to coal were focused on the location of mines capable of supplying the warships of the Navy. This pretension met with numerous difficulties due to the low profitability of the mines and the erroneous dating of the coals, supposedly Carboniferous, until in 1886 Enrique Abella y Casariego confirmed their Cenozoic age. The goal concluded with the transfer of the Spanish colony to the United States of America in December 1898. In the present work, the historiography of the Mining Bureau of the Philippine Islands during the 19th century is analyzed with its achievements, protagonists and difficulties in relation to coal mining. It went through three stages: 1) between 1846, when the first mining law was passed and 1852, with the discovery of the Guila-Guila coal mine in the island of Cebu; 2) between 1853 and 1859, with the measures taken by the state for the protection of coal mining; and 3) between 1860 and 1898, when geological investigations were approached from a more scientific point of view. Finally, the biographies of the mining engineers Antonio Hernández Espiera and César Lasaña Vázquez are sketched for the first time. | Versión del editor: | https://sge.usal.es/archivos/REV/32(1)/RSGE32(1)_p_43_62.pdf | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10261/277045 | ISSN: | 2255-1379 |
