ResumenIn the context of the National Co-funded Project “Design of a New generation of Generators and Ancillary Equipment for Wind Energy Based on Superconductors”, Gamesa Innovation and Technology S.L.U., ICMAB-CSIC and ICMA-CSIC-UNIZAR have developed and built a first protoype of a Medium Speed generator based in the well proved 2MW DFIG generators which are extensively installed in the Drive Train of the existing 2MW class Wind Turbines. The prototype has been tested in order to determine its thermal and electrical performances and possible cost competitiveness considering the global impact, in the medium size wind generators, considering thermal, mechanical and electrical concerns. Details of the superconducting architecture developed, cryogenics and mechanical concerns are reported.The resulting generator is able to improve the power an simplifies the overall system
