La Santa Sede y la II República (1934-1939). Paz o victoria

Abstract

[ES] Las relaciones entre el Vaticano y la II República Española pueden resumirse en tres fases. La primera, se inicia en abril de 1931. Se pasa de la conciliación al conflicto. La segunda comienza en diciembre de 1931. Hay un cambio de estrategia. Se abandona el espíritu de cruzada y comienza el de la misión. La tercera, producido el cambio electoral en diciembre de 1933, derrotada la izquierda. Desde 1934 y hasta 1939, la Santa Sede negocia sobre los derechos e intereses de los católicos hasta julio de 1936. Iniciada la guerra civil, el Vaticano quiso mediar entre las partes enfrentadas para que negociaran entre ellas. Para paliar las desgracias y las miserias de la guerra, desarrolló una acción humanitaria. Ante el dilema paz o victoria, el Vaticano elige trabajar por la paz. Primero los Gobiernos del Presidente Azaña y, después, los militares y los Gobiernos de Franco, se negaron a negociar la paz. Al elegir la victoria, cada uno anunciaba que sería implacable con los vencidos. Así sucedió durante la guerra y cuando acabó esta.
