Doctor en Ciencias Biológicas por la Universidad de Barcelona en 1977. Actualmente es Profesor de Investigación del CSIC adscrito al Departamento de Ecología Marina. Las principales líneas de investigación en las que trabaja se centran en la ecología de peces litorales, especialmente en aquellos aspectos ligados a sus pautas de asentamiento, dinámica, flujo génico y conservación, incluyendo el efecto de las reservas marinas en las poblaciones. Asimismo, otra línea de investigación está dirigida hacia la taxonomía de crustáceos decápodos, especialmente de las familias Galatheidae, Lithodidae y Nephropidae. Esta línea se desarrolla principalmente en aguas del Pacífico e Indico, utilizando tanto aspectos morfológicos como moleculares.
