AbstractMelanocortin system is one of the most complex hormonal systems in vertebrates. Agonists including melanocyte.stimulating hormones (MSH) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) are encoded into a single precursor called proopiomelanocortin (POMC). The proteolytic cleavage of POMC by prohormone convertase 1 (PC1) generates ACTH and beta-lipotropin in the corticotrophs whereas cleavage by PC1 and PC2 produces alfa-MSH and beta-endorphin in the melanotrophs.
