Analytical pyrolysis of Eucalyptus spp. wood grown in Uruguay. Implications for pulping efficiency

ResumenCurrent total area of forest in Uruguay is 1.721.658 ha, 43% corresponds to natural forests and 57% to plantations. About 70% of this area is forested with Eucalyptus, being E. globulus and E. grandis the predominant species1. Pulp industry has been increased during the latest years representing more than half of the total extraction of wood. Chemical characterization of Eucalyptus wood becomes important for improving pulp production. In this work analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC/MS) is used to study wood samples from different eucalyptus species (E. grandis, E. dunnii and E. benthamii) and from different seed origin grown in Uruguay. A chemotaxonomic study based in all compounds released after pyrolysis as well as using only those from lignin origin allows a clear differentiation between species (E. grandis from E. dunnii and E. benthamii). Conspicuous differences were also found between guaiacyl-type (G) and syringyl-type (S) methoxyphenol units (G/S ratios) released from the pyrolysis of the polyphenolic wood constituents. This ratio has been proposed as an index of the ease of delignification of the different eucalyptus species when pulped by the Kraft process2.
