The role of metallothionein and selenium in metal detoxification in the liver of deep sea fish from the NW Mediterranean Sea

ResumenContent on metals (silver, copper, cadmium, zinc, iron, mercury, lead and selenium) and metallothionein (MT) levels and activities of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were analysed in seven deep-­‐sea fish species (Alepocephalus rostratus, Mora moro, Lepidion lepidion, Coelorinchus mediterraneus, Nezumia aequalis, Trachyrynchus scabrous and Bathypterois mediterraneus) sampled from the Blanes Canyon area (NW Mediterraenan). Liver levels of metals (except mercury) in these Mediterranean species were intermediate to those found in similar species from Atlantic open waters and hydrothermal vents. The mechanisms of detoxification of metals in these species were discussed by means of metallothionein (MT) content and molar ratios between MT or selenium and selected metals. In a species dependent manner, metal detoxification mechanisms varied on reliance of MT or selenium content and, in some other instances, the protective role of zinc was shown as the most likely mechanisms to handle metal toxicity in liver. Stress physiological parameters in muscle, such as AChE and LDH activities, could not be related to metal content in liver, thus the activities measured seem to correspond to baseline enzymatic activities as fish were sampled at the same time and location
