ResumenThe Ela gene region of adenovirus 5 produces five mRNAs. The major 289R and 243R proteins are encoded by the two most abundant mRNAs, denoted as 13S and 12S, respectively (for a review see 1). The Ela gene from adenovirus type 5 is implicated in many cellular effects such as blocking of differentiation apoptosis and induction of chemosensitivity and radiosensitivity (for a review see 21). Moreover, Ela has been shown to be able to induce apoptosis by p53-independent mechanism after DNA damage or other situations (2, 3). Adenovirus 5 Ela protein may inhibit interferon-stimulated gene expression, and induce susceptibility of mammalian cells to lysis by natural killer lymphocytes (26). Most, if not all, of the biological effects of Ela are related to the binding of different cellular proteins, such as p33, p60 (Cyclin A), p105 (pRb), p107, p130, p300, p400, CBP, Dr1, YY1 (for review see 1).
