AbstractA comparative study between the acoustic protection produced by the diffraction around corners and screens is described. Among the algorithms proposed by different authors for a rigid wedge, we have selected those of Pierce due to the practical advantages of numerical calculation. Pierce offers two approximations to the diffraction for a rigid wedge: one based in terms of auxiliary Fresnel functions by means of complex variable techniques, and a simplified version based on the asymptotic series of the Fresnel diffraction functions. It has been described the spatial zones in which both formulations can be used, especially the spatial limits for the second one. The article concludes showing that, in general, the acoustic protection provided by a screen is higher than those provided by a rigid corner with the same effective height.
