Technical Note: Constructive Aspects of the Artificial Stone Veneer (arcosita "Butsems") of the South Façade of the Spanish Senate Palace

Abstract

[En] The South façade of the Senate of Spain (Marina Square, Madrid) has undergone transformations since it was the old Convent-College of the Augustinians (1581-1601). According to photographical and historical documentation, by 1951 the coating was fully repaired and all its compositional and ornamental elements were dismantled. The reconstruction was carried out using cladding with an artificial stone (polished “arcosita Butsems”) made with a low content of portlandite, according to the XRD and FTIR tests performed. This paper covers the taking of samples, the testing and analysis of the materials, and a brief description of the pathological processes suffered as a result of the manufacture and installation of the cladding.

[ES] La fachada sur del Senado de España (Plaza de la Marina de Madrid) ha sufrido transformaciones desde que fuera el antiguo convento-colegio de Agustinos (1581-1601). Según la documentación fotográfica e histórica, hacia 1951 se saneó completamente el revestimiento y se desmontaron todos sus elementos compositivos y ornamentales. La reconstrucción se llevó a cabo mediante un chapado de piedra artificial (“arcosita Butsems” pulida), hecha con baja presencia de portlandita según los ensayos XRD y FTIR realizados. En el trabajo se presenta la toma de muestras, la caracterización de los materiales y una breve descripción de los procesos patológicos sufridos a causa de la fabricación y colocación del aplacado.
