Investigations on the revegetation problems of landfill soils in semiarid environment

Abstract

Land degradation has become a major global concern in recent years as a result of increasing demands of land for waste disposal. In the territory studied, characterized by siliceous soils and mediterranean continental climate, the landfill cover constitutes one of the most disturbed man-made systems, suffering erosión and chemical and physical degradation. Ecological reclamation involves the re-establishment of vegetation cover. The results indicate that specially autochthonous plants could fulfil the requirements of survival and regenerative function needed for an optimal revegetation.
