Synthesis and photonic bandgap characterization of polymer inverse opals

AbstractPolymer inverse opals exhibiting photonic crystal properties were analyzed to determine the bandgap chracteristics. Fabrication of opals employed the method of re-growth based on Stober-Fink-Bohn technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the opals were taken after polishing and silica was removed from composite material by etching. Optical chracterization of the different stages of opal synthesis was done by reflectance and transmission spectroscopy. The results reavealed agreememt between the theoretical and experimental behaviour of photonic crystals.
