Direct magnetocaloric measurements of Fe-B-Cr-X (X = La, Ce) amorphous ribbons

AbstractA procedure has been developed to directly measure the adiabatic temperature change of amorphous melt-spun Fe-based ribbons displaying attractive room temperature magnetocaloric properties. Polycrystalline Gd ribbons are used as a reference material to compensate for the contribution of the sample holder to the experimental values. Fe 78B 12Cr 8Ce 2 and Fe 75B 12Cr 8Ce 5 melt-spun ribbons exhibited a peak adiabatic temperature change (ΔT ad pk) ∿ 58% larger than Co 82.9Si 5.9Fe 4.5Cr 4B 2.7 amorphous ribbons. The ΔT ad pk in Fe 78B 12Cr 8Ce 2, Fe 75B 12Cr 8Ce 5, and Fe 79B 12Cr 8La 1 ribbons displayed ∿ 18-33% enhanced ΔT ad pk compared to a GdAl 2 alloy. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.
