ResumenA new approach to the control of pressure during the cooling stage in steam retorts is presented. Control laws are designed on the basis of Internal Model Control (IMC) techniques implemented on PID-type controllers. This feature makes this technology very attractive because controller parameters depend on the type of closed loop response desired by the user. In order to assure that pressure in the retort is greater than that at the container (for conduction heated products), constant pressure profiles in the set point are used. This strategy is compared with a previously proposed on/off algorithm and its better performance demonstrated in a simulation example.
