AbstractIn a recent publication, Villares et al. (2007) present the results of a biomonitoring study to assess the contamination by trace elements in the Galician Rias due to the oil spill caused by the shipwreck of the Prestige oil tanker on November 2002. To this end, they report the metal concentrations in two species of brown macroalgae (Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus ceranoides) collected along the Galician coastline before and after the oil spill. They concluded that ‘The oil slick apparently did not cause significant increases in the concentrations of trace metals studied, except vanadium'. Unfortunately, we feel that this conclusion is driven by misconception on the marine and coastal behavior of vanadium and therefore it is unfounded based on the data presented.
