AbstractDynamic Controlled Atmosphere ( DCA ) has been applied for the first time, in 1975, with the goal to study the effects of CO2 levels on delaying the ripening of "Golden Delicious" apple. The temperature, the relative humidity and O2 concentration have been maintaining at constant values, respectively +2ºC, 98%r.h. and 3%O2, while the CO2 concentration has been elevated from 0 to 5%, ,gradually in the case of DCA , in such a way that during the first storage month it was 0%, from the second month it was arosed to 2% and from the third month it was maintained at 5% to the end of the storage period of six months. Also, high Pre-CO2 of 10% during the 10 initial days were applied for DCA and for the traditional CA of 3% O2 and 5% CO2.It is constated that DCA with Pre-CO2 limits the pulp softening as well as the weight losses and fungal diseases, what permets to extend the storage period at least for one month, respect the other traditional storage conditions essayed.
DescriptionThis work was carried out during the three seasons since 1974 to 1977, at the Instituto del Frio-CSIC, and it was the subject of the Doctoral Theses of R.Alique, directed by J.L. De la Plaza, who presented it at the Meeting of Commissions B2, C2 and D1 of the International Institut of Refrigeration, in Sofia ( Bulgaria) , year 1982. The first definition of DCA was made by J.L.de la Plaza , in the CEF-CSIC Annual Report for 1975.The concept of DCA (" Atmósfera Controlada Dinámica" ) is now extended in the scientific communnity, nevertheless with different programme for the atmosphere composition.
