El lápiz rojo de Samuel Gili Gaya: de investigador del Centro de Estudios Históricos a profesor del Instituto-Escuela y catedrático desterrado en Torrelavega

Abstract

[EN] This paper addresses two main issues. Firstly, the influence of the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas (JAE) (Committee for Further Study and Scientific Research) and its research centres, for instance, El Centro de Estudios Históricos, (the Historical Research Center), on the implantation of innovative educational methods and experiences in the first third of the 20th century. Secondly, it sets out the contributions of Samuel Gili Gaya, grammarian, linguist, lexicographer, literary critic and teacher, as an example of researcher teacher in high school since 1918 concerned in improving the secondary school educational program in Spain. Gili Gaya, who was an apt pupil of Ramón Menéndez Pidal, after obtaining his post as Professor in high school, he was selected by the JAE as one of the first professors or the Instituto-Escuela. At that avantgarde school he held until the beginning of the Spanish Civil War an important role as a professor of Spanish language and literature, teaching students to think and write clearly and accurately by reading classic works of Hispanic literature, such as those that formed the corpus of the so named Biblioteca Literaria del Estudiante (Student Literary Library). In addition to his educational work, we also mention his research interests in various fi elds of linguistics such phonetics, syntax and lexicography. Among these highlights above all El Tesoro Lingüistico (the “Linguistic Treasure”) which by the circumstances of the time when it was written could not be finished.

[ES] En este texto se abordan dos cuestiones. En primer lugar se muestra la influencia que tuvo la Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas (JAE) y sus centros de investigación, como el Centro de Estudios Históricos, en la implantación de métodos y experiencias educativas renovadoras en el primer tercio del siglo XX. Así sucedió con la creación del Instituto-Escuela, impulsado por la JAE desde 1918 para mejorar la enseñanza secundaria. En segundo lugar se presenta como ejemplo de investigador-docente en el bachillerato la trayectoria de Samuel Gili Gaya, gramático, lingüista, lexicógrafo, crítico literario y pedagogo. Este discípulo de Ramón Menéndez Pidal, tras obtener una cátedra de Instituto, fue seleccionado por la JAE como uno de los primeros profesores del Instituto-Escuela. En esa renovadora institución educativa llevó a cabo hasta la Guerra Civil una importante labor docente como profesor de Lengua y Literatura españolas enseñando a sus alumnos a pensar y escribir con claridad y precisión mediante la lectura de obras clásicas de las literaturas hispanas, como las que integraron el corpus de la Biblioteca Literaria del Estudiante. Además de su labor educativa, también nos hacemos eco de su labor investigadora en distintos campos de la lingüística, como la fonética, la sintaxis y la lexicografía. Entre estos trabajos destaca el Tesoro lingüístico, obra que por la circunstancias de la época que le tocó vivir no pudo terminar.
