ResumenThe true character of the influence of the Natural History of New Spain has been distorted by a series of repeated errors and misconceptions about Francisco Hernández and his work. No one denies the exceptional importance of Hernández's expedition to Mexico, and yet it is a widely held -albeit erroneous- belief that the results of the expedition were scarcely circulated and that they were known only partially and long after the fact, even among the best informed. That such a belief can take hold at all suggests unawareness of the circumstances and the content of the printed texts that appeared in the first half of the seventeenth century, not to mention the important role played by those texts in the development of modern botany and materia medica.
