AbstractA biochemical method for the determination of affinity or incompatibility between scions and rootstocks in grape grafting is described. This method is based on the comparison of scions´ and rootstocks´ total proteins. Total proteins of 5 Vitis vinifera L. cultivars (Airén, Bobal, Garnacha, Tempranillo, Viura) and 6 rootstocks (420-A, 41-B, 99-R, 1lO-R, 161-49, 196-17C) were extracted and analysed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. From the REM (relative electrophoretic mobilities) of proteins the affinity indexes between scion and stock (Ki-p) and stock and scion (Kp-i) combinations were calculated. The results obtained were confronted with those advanced from cultural studies. The application of this biochemical method can allow to learn a priori which rootstocks may be compatible with a given cultivar.
