ResumenA 2' by 2' grid of gravity anomalies obtained by inversion of satellite data of Geosat, ERS-l, ERS-2 and Topex/Poseidon is used in a test area defined by 38.OO<lat<40.00, 33l.OO<lon<333.00 in order to refine the JGP95E 5' by 5' bathymetry/topography grid in that zone. The computation is based on an iterative procedure that for k= 1,... evaluates at each node of the grid of the gravity anomalies the answer L'.g' (i) induced by the grid ofthe bathymetry; the difference D.g'ei) - L'.g' 'ei) are then computed; the improvement L'.h' (j) to each node of the bathymetry is obtained by solving by least squares the system of equations óg'(i)-óg(i),' =p óg(i)I 6.h'(j); finally b'(j)=h'-'(j)+L'.h'(j) and the computation is óh(J) "".,, repeated until í D.g'(i)-L'.g'-'(i) j< tol. This system of equations is close to singular so several types of smoothness constraints are tested. The results are compared with the high precision digital terrain model AZDTM98, wirh a Fx J' resolution on sea and 20"x 20" on land, obtained by systematic bathymetric surveys with swath systems complemented with topographic data on the islands.
