Order in a disordered world. The Bertha house (Western Ethiopia)

Abstract

[ES] Se describe la estructuración del espacio doméstico entre los bertha de la frontera etíope-sudanesa. Los bertha son el grupo Nilo-Sahariano más grande que vive actualmente en Etiopía y se extienden hacia el occidente dentro de Sudán. La mayor parte de la población vive en casas tradicionales circulares hechas de bambú y paja. A pesar de su conversión masiva al Islam, todavía tienen un número importante de prácticas pre-musulmanas, algunas de las cuales se reflejan claramente en el uso y organización de la casa. Se hace hincapié en la relevancia del espacio doméstico para ordenar el mundo y su relación con el cuerpo.

[EN] The structuring of domestic space among the Bertha people of the Ethiopian-Sudanese borderland is described. The Bertha are the largest Nilo-Saharan group currently living in Ethiopia, and they stretch out further west into Sudan. The overwhelming majority of the population lives in traditional round houses made with bamboo and straw. Despite their massive conversion to Islam, they still have a number of pre-Muslim practices, some of them clearly reflected on the use and organization of the house. The relevance of domestic space for ordering the world and its relationship to the body are stressed.
