La petrificación de una villa: historia social de Sepúlveda a través de la arqueología de la arquitectura

Abstract

[EN] The city walls of Sepúlveda serve as a palimpsest of particular interest in understanding the evolution of construction of the settlement as well as its genesis as a Villa y Tienll community between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. The research we conducted reveals that the defensive function of the wall assumes additional roles within the urban organization. For instance, we have established that the wall functioned as a type of tax control and as a material boundary of the privileges included in foundation charters. Thanks to previous work carried out by scholars, we have a detailed knowledge of the development of the walls. U sing a method of archeology of architecture, we ha ve added a stratigraphic analysis of construction techniques to the existing scholarship. This paper has been developed within the European ERC Petrifying Wealth project, directed by Ana Rodriguez (IH - CSIC) and Sandro Carocci (Universita di Roma Tor Vergata).

[ES] Las murallas de Sepúlveda son un palimpsesto de gran interés para comprender la evolución constructiva de la ciudad y, por extrapolación, la génesis de su comunidad de Villa y Tierra entre los siglos XI – XIII. La muralla como elemento defensivo cobra una dimensión añadida como sistema de control fiscal y delimitador de privilegios reflejados en los distintos fueros. Se ha desarrollado una revisión de los distintos estudios existentes sobre la muralla que nos han permitido tener una perspectiva más detallada de la misma. A ello se añade la información estratigráfica y el análisis de las técnicas constructivas aportada por el estudio de arqueología de la arquitectura desarrollado dentro del proyecto europeo ERC Petrifying Wealth dirigido por Ana Rodríguez (IH – CSIC) y Sandro Carocci (Università di Roma Tor Vergata).
