AbstractThis book addresses the colossal biodiversity of the Neotropics and provides a range of potential explanations for its origin and maintenance. In general, we use the term “Neotropics” as synonym of “tropical America”—i.e., the part of this continent situated between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn—rather than of the Neotropical biogeographical realm, which includes also the southern part of South America and excludes the Mexican highlands. However, the geographical distribution of the taxonomic groups studied in some chapters makes necessary to consider certain extratropical areas for a thorough study.
