Recent contributions debating the mechanisms behind long-term impacts of socioeconomic differences on health and mortality at advanced ages have led to the question to what extent the pension benefits determine the survival of the retired population. We intent to contribute to this debate with an analysis of the investments in pension funds over the life time and access to particular pension types pay off on for the health and mortality of the population older than 65. The analysis is conducted using the newly available longitudinal population register data provided by the population department of the Council for Scientific Research of Spain and the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA). While we found strong evidences for positive pension income effects by individual pension type on the survival of men, the results for women were ambiguous and call for an extension of the examination on the household level.es_ES
