dc.description.abstract | Viruses are the most abundant biological entities in aquatic ecosystems, (1030 viruses in the world oceans), and are the greatest reservoir of the genetic diversity in the sea. The majority of viruses are phages (virus that infect bacteria), which kills bacteria by lysis, contributing to biogeochemical cycles, returning the organic matter to the water column. Within the frame of Malaspina circumnavigation project, I assessed the viral abundance in Atlantic, Indic and Pacific oceans using the flow cytometry technique. I also assessed the viral–bacteria ratio (VBR) in each sea layer (epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathypelagic), and finally, I studied the change in composition of viral communities between five different depth (surface, DCM, DSL, depth 1, and depth 2) using a fingerprinting technique (RAPD-PCR). In one hand, I expect that (i) there will be major viral abundance in surface waters than in deep waters, and (ii) that the VBR will also decrease in the deepest waters. And in the other hand, I (iii) evaluate the composition of viral communities in the different depth, to observe whether there are differences when comparing similar depths among oceans | - |
