A Relational framework for analyzing the reuse of research data

AbstractAn accepted tenet of scientific progress rests on the critical role of resource sharing, namely research data (RD). In order to design the socio-technical infrastructures for sharing RD, some scholars have suggested that the factors and causes of RD reuse could inform its design. However, few studies have addressed the socio-technical aspects of the process of reusing RD. One of the conclusions is that it is a complex process conditioned by many obstacles and enabling factors. This complexity has probably not allowed scholars to identify the causes of RD reuse despite some attempts. Furthermore, drawing upon our own research on the process of reusing RD in ten case studies in health disciplines, and building mainly on studies in the sociology of science, we suggest that some factors have been overlooked (e.g., the role of the data within the research question as evidence of scientific claims), or have not been properly addressed (e.g., the fitness of the research question with the data). Against this background, this research aims to provide an analytical relational framework, which presents and differentiates causes and factors affecting the reuse of RD. In our framework, causes are conditions that produce the reuse of RD, while factors are conditions that only influence the reuse of RD. The framework is relational since we suggest that causes only appear when the different elements, namely the researcher, the research question, the data, and researcher’s context and situation enter into a one-to-one relationship, while factors may be independent of these relationships.
