Title

Possibilities and requirements for works and products on 3D printing technology

AuthorsTenorio Ríos, José Antonio; Sotorrío Ortega, Guillermo

CitationDigital Construction Week (2019)
AbstractBuilding with 3d printers offers to the market a new technology full of possibilities. Some experts say without doubts that is the future of construction. However, if we analyse in detail the visible experiences of the projects in progress or finalised, we realize that the simple wall is the most repeated figure. That is why because practical applications are not seen. Building with printers now is not competitive enough. The first thing that becomes necessary is to analyze what elements and in what environments printers under construction can have a real added value. Technical regulations and client's demands establishes the minimum requirements for security and suitability in the works. In traditional construction requirements are well known, specifications and performance can be evaluated using standards. 3DPrinting as a novel technology lacks of these experience. During the H2020 HindCON project a complete study has done about required certifications and approvals. HindCON is the third and last project developed about 3D Printing in a European consortium. This project is in the aims to adapt manufacturing technologies to the construction sector, advancing towards industrialization and overcoming the limitations of actual approach for introducing Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing in construction activities. Previously we participated in Print'n Build and 3DCONS projects. The presentation will show the objectives, scope and the results in the project regarding with 3D printing, additive and subtractive, from the point of view of the requirements for works and their relationship on the 3d printing products- characteristics, regulatory requirements and the essential characteristics and relevant assessment methods. The presentation will began with a state of the art with the European standards that may be applicable, a complete review on the new materials developed, the 3D printing process and the possible products, with their intended uses. Later a description of the new 3D printing materials will be included and 3D printing construction processes. Furthermore will reach the possible 3D printed construction products with their intended uses, separating them into elements for the building and elements for civil works. Finally, we will analyse the work requirements and their relationship in the characteristics of 3D printing products and their verification methods. Work requirements include those related to processes and execution.
