These building blocks involved in the reactions are designed in a way so that the final material, such as graphene nanoribbons and nanoporous graphene, has a finely tuned width, edge, and doping, making it suitable for the implementation in transistors, as membranes for water desalination, gas filtering and for the sequencing of the DNA. The resulting graphene nanostructures are characterised by Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM) to study the topography with atomic resolution, complemented with X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to track the on-surface chemical reactions by its chemical composition.
