dc.description.abstract | The coatings used for corrosion protection typically contain pigments which constantly release substances that inhibit the corrosion process. In recent decades, the hexavalent chromium compounds have been the main anticorrosive pigments used in protective corrosion systems for metal surfaces, due to their excellent effectiveness/cost and excellent compatibility with most organic matrices. However, it is well known that these chromium compounds are highly toxic and carcinogenic, so their use implies a high risk to both, the health of workers and the environment, which has led to severe restrictions in their use. Further, the constant leaching process of the corrosion inhibitor, directly incorporated into the organic matrix, reduces the coating service life. Therefore, there is a special interest for the development of new smart anticorrosive systems that are not only as effective and efficient as chromate-based systems but also environmentally friendly. In this sense, the rapid growth of nanotechnology has opened up a range of possibilities in the field of protective coatings, through the integration of nanoscale containers, loaded with active and encapsulated components into coatings. Through proper design of the capsule, the release of the encapsulated corrosion inhibitor may be caused by various external or internal factors (pH changes, mechanical damage, etc.), therefore avoiding spontaneous leakage of the active component and thus achieving greater efficiency and economy in the use of the inhibitor, which is only released on.. | - |
