AbstractSince the beginning of the new century, the relationships between war and emotions like fear, mourning, brutalization, enthusiasm of young soldiers, joy or pleasure in killing, and resentment have been considerably explored. Yet these are by no means the only collective emotions that extreme situations like wars unleash among human beings. They compete with other emotions, such as compassion toward victims and their sufferings. In past and present times, this emotion has moved many people to empathize with victims’ individual fate and to seek their relief. From the mid-eighteenth century on, particularly in Europe and North America, compassion toward others’ suffering gradually became a central issue in the public sphere. It influenced social reform debates and policies in areas as disparate as the abolition of slavery, the improvement of living conditions in slum districts, the confinement of the insane, prisoners, and beggars, the relief of indigents, the education of women and children, and the concern for the survival of “primitive peoples”.
