AbstractAs ocean observations are increasingly being supported by new sensor technologies, autonomous, underway and cabled platforms often keep delivering data through archive repositories and using different conventions that make data difficult to find, access interoperate with, and reuse (FAIR). If (near) real-time is required, a value that sensor networks should reasonably be able to provide in specific applications (water quality monitoring), current ocean observing system data repositories are often impractical. Sensor web technologies have been under the scope of observatory operators for about a decade, considered as a potential solution to bridge this gap. The variety of observing platforms, mobile and fixed, coupled with the increasing number of variables of interest for the community, is commensurate with the variety of commercial and non-commercial products in the ocean observing system value chain, from sensors to data products. This situation calls for harmonization and standardization from sensor to data. Here we demonstrate and assess the use of the sensor web framework in a multiplatform multivariable context, drawing lessons from recent experiments at the PLOCAN test site, using mobile and fixed platforms equiped with different sensor types, including the EMSO generic module (EGIM)
