AbstractIn this paper, a review of the functional studies on the Mesolithic flaked stone assemblages from Portugal is presented. Use wear studies on Portuguese Mesolithic lithic assemblages have so far been too limited, both in terms of the number of analysed sites and the sample stze. Despite the limited number of analysis carried out, use-wear data provide us with a first insight into the Mesolithic lithic economy. Differences and continuities in toolkit composition between Early and Late Mesohthic complexes are here discussed, taking into account the following sites: Cabeço da Amoreiras in the Muge estuary (Santarém), Barca do Xerez de Baixo Xarez 12 and Carraça 1 in the Rio Guadiana valley (Evora), Vale Marim I on the Alentejo Coast (Setúbal), and Cova Baleia in the Lisbon Peninsula (Lisboa).
