Margalef´s hypothesis. Experimental approaches

AbstractThis contribution examines the effect of the combination of two levels of turbulence (Q, absence of agitation, or T, turbulence induced by an oscillating grid) and zooplankton predation pressure (no zooplankton or Z, zooplankton added) on the evolution of natural phytoplankton communities enclosed in 30 L microcosms. An initial phytoplankton bloom dominated by centric diatoms occurred around the 5th day after enclosure in all the treatments except the TZ one, in which it was de1ayed until day 12. After this initial bloom, small flagellates became the most abundant group in all the treatments. Presence or absence of turbulence (Q or T treatments) and zooplankton addition or not, without turbulence, (QZ or Q) resulted in similar phytoplankton dynamics, while the interaction turbulence. X zooplankton addition (TZ) induced marked changes in the phytoplankton composition. In the TZ microcosms, when both turbulence and increased predator pressure were present, the abundance of dinoflagellates and several diatom taxa became markedly reduced with respect to the other treatments. The results are compared with those of the other experiments and discussed within the framework of Margalef’s conceptual model of phytoplankton life-forms selection
