Despite the diffusion of childbearing within consensual union, the share of total fertility attributable to unpartnered women is increasing in many Latin American countries. This association is not confined to adolescent age. We look into this phenomenon using census data from 11 Latin American countries for which it is possible to compare at least two censuses. We focus on the changes in the composition of the population of unpartnered women and on the changes in the relations between their characteristic and their fertility. Results show that despite large variation across countries in the specifics of unpartnered women fertility, the main driver of the increasing share of fertility attributable to unpartnered women is the increasing proportion of unpartnered women. The increasing proportion of separated and divorced women among unpartnered women is not a major source of the increasing share of the overall fertility attributable to unpartnered women.-
