ResumenMatrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) is a simple, fast, and versatile technique for preparation of solid, semi-solid, liquid, and viscous samples. Since its introduction two decades ago, MSPD has experienced rapid development and, nowadays, can be considered a widely accepted technique in many research areas. The feasibility of MSPD for the determination of both endogenous and exogenous matrix components through simple dispersion of the sample constituents on the surface of an appropriate solid support and subsequent elution of the target compounds with a suitable solvent has been demonstrated through a number of application studies dealing with widely divergent sample matrices. Recent trends include the miniaturization of the technique, its combined use with other modern enhanced fluid extraction techniques and the application of an auxiliary energy source to the extraction column to speed up or to improve the efficiency of the process. The promising results obtained with these new combined approaches could contribute to expand further the general acceptance of this already mature and valuable analytical tool.
