AbstractOxidation reactions of several furan derivatives as effective methods for the preparation of key synthetic intermediates are reviewed. Depending on the oxidizing reagent the furan ring can be considered as a C-1 or C-4 synthon, which upon different conditions leads to 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds, carboxylic acids, pyranones or butenolides.
