ResumenMany characteristics of the pattern of food supply are likely to affect the ability of animals to show compensatory growth after food restriction. In winter 1988-89 two experiments were conducted to investigate two of these factors in Scottish Blackface lambs (i) duration of food restriction and (ii) dietary protein:energy ratio during restriction. Samples from (ii) have been processed and show that during food restriction to constant body weight using a low protein:energy diet (LP) resulted in smaller diqestive organs than restriction using the same dry matter intake of a high protein:energy diet (HP). When the two groups were realimented using the HP diet there were no differences in animal performance and the size differences in the digetive tract components disappeared.
