Contribución al estudio de la solleta (Citharus linguatula Günth) del Mediterráneo occidental (Sectores de Vinaroz e Islas Columbretes)

Abstract

[EN] A study of the most important biological features of Citharus linguatula in Vinaroz (Easthem Spain). Commercial catches are based on individuals of 14 to 20 cm length, with an average of 16,7 cm, females are always longer and, except in spawning times, scarcer than males in the fishing grounds extending from 40 to 70 falhoms Citharus spawns from beginning August to beginning November; the consumption of fat from !iver proceeds with some delay in relation to spawning what is uncommon in other fishes. Food consist mostly in fishes and crustaceans; squids and microplankton are minor items. Fishes average 10-12 cm at the end of first year of life, and 14-16 at the end of the second year. They spawn for the first time when two years old (about 16 cm length). The intense overfishing in the area has a special detrimental effect upon species that spend two years in reaching maturity
