El Archivo de la S. C. de Asuntos Eclesiásticos Extraordinarios. I. Fuentes para la historia de Espafta desde sus orígenes hasta la muerte de Pío IX (1878)

Abstract

[EN]The Sacred Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, known to-day as the Council for the Public Affairs of the Church, is that Department of the Roma Curia which is competent for ecclesiastical affairs which have political or diplomatic as­pects in the relations between the Holy See and civil states. Even though it is of fairly recent origin in comparison with some other departments of the Roman Curia, having been instituted only at the end of the eighteenth century, its archives are fundamental far the study of Church-State relations in any country. With regard to Spain the most interesting documentation begins in the early nineteenth century, although there are also sorne papers belonging to the eighteenth century.The present article provides a sum­ mary description of the contents of the six hundred and fifty-eight dossiers which contain documents referring to Spanish affairs from the beginning of the eighteenth century until the death of Pope Pius IX in 1878. This is consequently the investigator's guide when he first approaches these archives which, together with those of the Secretariate of State, are considered the most important far the study of contemporary history based on Vatican sources.

[ES]La Sagrada Congregación de Asuntos Eclesiásticos Extraordinarios, conocida hoy con el nombre de Consejo para los Asuntos Públicos de la Iglesia, es el dicasterio de la Curia Romana competente para las materias eclesiásticas, que tienen implicaciones polí­ticas o diplomáticas en las relaciones entre la Santa Sede y los Estados. Aunque su his­toria es relativamente reciente, si se le compara con otros dicasterios de la Curia Roma­na, porque fue instituida a finales del siglo XVIII, conserva un archivo que es fundamental para estudiar las relaciones Iglesia-Estado en cualquier nación. Con respecto a España, la documentación más interesante comienza en los albores del siglo XIX, si bien existen al­ gunos papeles referentes al siglo XVIII. El presente trabajo describe sumariamente el con­tenido de los 658 expedientes, que conservan documentación relativa a los asuntos de España, desde comienzos del siglo XVIII hasta el fallecimiento de Pío IX en 1878. Es, por consiguiente, la primera guía impresa para el investigador que se acerca a este archivo, considerado con el de la Secretaría de Estado, el más importante para estudiar la his­toria contemporánea desde la documentación vaticana.
