A decision support system for risk based management of Verticillium wilt in olive in Mediterranean environments under current and climate change scenarios

AbstractThe combined use of epidemiological analyses and tools based in geographic information systems have proven efficient for the study of plant diseases and the development of predictive models and decision-support systems (DSS) for their management. Verticillium wilt (VW) of olive caused by the soil-borne fungus Verticillium dahliae is of major concern for the olive industry in the Mediterranean basin, mainly due to the rapid and wide spread of the highly virulent defoliating (D) pathotype. In addition to this, it must be considered the uncertainty that for the agricultural production and plant pathosystems could have the environmental changes that might take place as a consequence of climate change. We have implemented a simple web-based decision-making platform for predicting the risk of Verticillium wilt in olive in Mediterranean environments based on: (i) results of a series of experiments in controlled environmental conditions on the effects of temperature and CO2 concentration on virulence of V. dahliae pathotypes and olive cultivars interactions; (ii) regional geographic distribution of disease occurrence; and (iii) models that quantify the effects that agronomic, soil, geographic, and climatic factors for both current and future climate-change scenarios on the occurre nce and potential geographical distribution of Verticillium wilt at southern Spain.
