Abstract

[EN] We tend often to forget that behind the clinical positivism and the medicalization of the passions characteristic the psychiatry of nineteenth century psychiatry, there was a clear attempt to domain subjective examination. This paper will analyze the work of Gladys Swain on the birth of alienism. We review her interpretative model, as opposed to the Foucaultian account on the origins of clinical psychiatry, and we evaluate the relevance of her approach for current historiography

[ES] A menudo tendemos a olvidar que detrás del positivismo clínico y la medicalización de las pasiones, que caracterizó la psiquiatría del siglo XIX, hubo un claro intento de exploración del campo subjetivo. Este artículo pretende analizar la obra de Gladys Swain acerca del nacimiento de la psiquiatría. Se revisa su modelo interpretativo, en relación al modelo de Foucault, y se evalúa la pertinencia de su enfoque sobre la historiografía actual.
