AbstractIn an attempt to explain to the fact, which we consider to be abnormal, that in the vaccum distillation of ergot oil neither enantol nor undecilenic acid are produced, the distillation is studied of two ergot oils of similar ricinoleic acid content but of a very different OH index. From a comparative study of these distillations and those of castor oil and acetylated castor oil it is concluded that the acid esterifying the OH group in ricinoleic acid is removed in the pyrolytic process with formation of a double bond, thus hindering the mechanism which would lead to the pyrolytic formation of enanthole and undecilenic acid.
