ResumenSpanish scholars have begun requesting courses in skills relevant to publishing in English in order to enhance their chances of seeing their work accepted by international journals. I argue that it would be pedagogically useful to include tasks to raise their awareness of English-Spanish crosscultural variation in academic writing. To support this, more crosscultural research into academic discourses in English and Spanish using rigorous comparative designs is still necessary. After reviewing previous crosscultural studies, I suggest some features of methodology and research design that would allow us to yield increasingly comparable, reliable and explanatory findings on which practical teaching applications could usefully draw.
