ResumenThe objective of this study was to analyze the chemical composition and in vitro gas production of samples of citrus by-products produced in Spain. Ten samples of citrus pulp (5 from orange and 5 from lemon) and 10 samples of citrus peel (5 from orange and 5 from lemon) were used, and samples of barley grains and sugar beet pulp were included for comparison. The contents (g/kg dry matter) in neutral detergent fibre (189 - 310), sugars (289 - 460), crude protein (513 - 819) and ether extract (34.2 - 57.1) were variable, but in the range reported in the literature. Lemon samples had higher (P<0.05) fiber, crude protein and ether extract contents compared with orange samples, but lower (P<0.05) sugars content. There were no differences (P>0.05) between fractions (pulp vs. peel) in chemical composition. The potential gas production and gas production rate of all by- products were similar to those for barley, but the lag time of the citrus by-products was lower (<0.9 vs. >3.0 h), possibly due to their high sugars content. The results indicate that citrus by-products can be an adequate energy source in the diets of ruminants replacing barley.
