ResumenThis paper deals with the adoption of the Islamic pious endowments (awqaf/ahbas) by Jews and Christians in al-Andalus, taking into consideration the information provided by Arabic legal sources and particularly by collections of fatwas. This documentary base offers a set of data regarding the spread of this institution among non-Muslims and the ways they made use of it: on the one hand, to supply their temples with the assets required to sustain their worship and, on the other, to regulate the hereditary transmission of their family patrimony. This work shows the legal consideration given to such donations by the Maliki jurists of al-Andalus and consequently the problems regarding their legitimacy. This paper is framed within the period that marks the decline of the presence of the Christian and Jewish communities of al-Andalus as structured groups endowed with social, religious and economic cohesion.
